Kilcoole AC, Silver and Bronze at the National Masters Indoor Championships.

Kilcoole AC ----Bronze ---- At National Masters 1,500m Indoor Championships.

On Sunday 15th January Kilcoole AC's John Baldwin was the our only athlete participating at the national master indoors which were held in Nenagh. John took the pace from the off and ran the first 400m in a blistering 68secs. He kept the pace as long as he could but unfortunately he was overtaken by 2 Rathfarnham AC Athletes but finished in the bronze medal position in a stunning time of 4:45:27

Kilcoole AC ----Silver ---- At National Masters 3,000m Indoor Championships.

Just fifteen minutes after claiming bronze in the 1,500m John Baldwin ran in the 3,000m. When most we heaped over with exhaustion, John was taking anhother sip of one of his magic (legal) potions. Full of confidence after the 1,500 he lined up amongst the competition. The indoor track now familar ground to John he took off and with stern determination he stuck with the leaders as long as he could. The leader absorbed the track but John and Martin Kelly from Raheny Shamrocks began a battle of wits and testing each other. But all those extra 400's and 200's over the last few months paid off and John took silver in 10:45:56 with over 30 seconds to spare in the end over the bronze medalist. Well done John

11th December 2011:

Fionnuala Britton takes gold at the 2011 European Cross Country Championships.

britton

As a competitive sport, cross-country running began in England with a game called “hare and hounds” or “the paper chase” in the early 19th century oh how things have changed since then.

The inaugural European Womens Senior Cross Country Championships were held in Alnwick in the United Kingdom in 1994 and Irelands Catriona McKienan won this event with a sense of style, grit and determination. But on 11th December 2011 European Athletics and Ireland found a new champion. Kilcoole AC's and Irelands very own Fionnuala Britton won the 18th SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Velenje Slovenia. After finishing fourth in this race last year, Fionnuala controlled the race and impressed her vision of glory and success on the other competitors.

Fionnuala was in a commanding position among a group of nine athletes after the 1km mark. After 2Km completed in a blistering 6 minutes 35 Fionnuala was leading with Dulce Felix of Portugal in second and Nadia Ejjafina in third. With footage of the race on TV being streamed live on RTE 2 it was inevitable excitement was mounting around Ireland, was it possible Ireland was now less than 15 minutes away from a second gold medal in this event.

britton

What followed will surely become an example of how it should be done to others, an inspirational run, a run that may define a career and possibly begin a new era in Irish athletics, we had Catriona McKiernan, we had Sonia O'Sullivan now we have a new hero Fionnuala Britton. She continued to run from the front like a true champion. she ran hard and fast, tested the rest and broke her competitors one by one. They had no reply, how could they. The heartache of a year ago must have spurred Fionnuala all year as all her hard work was about to pay off. The scenes that followed were exceptionally motivational. Lap after lap the pace picked up the gap from first to second extended, she dug deep, she ran harder and faster. There was no sign that she might falter as Fionnuala finished with 7 seconds to spare over her nearest rival and won the title, making her only the second Irish woman ever to do so. Today in a time of recession, when our people are struggling and morale is low, the Irish people have a new hero. Fionnuala you are an inspiration to all, your ability was never in doubt, your determination was never questioned. Today you joined the elite claiming your gold with style, I have no doubt that videos of your victory will be shown for years of how a true champion achieved and conquered. Congratulations on your win, your club and country is proud of you.

4th December 2011:

County Senior Cross Country Championships in Avondale.

Its that time of year again and Kilcoole AC had a big presence at this event as both men's and women's teams hoped to bring home medals for the club at County Level. Avondale is a location of debate and county folklore due to its beauty and alleged daunting challenging routes on offer. This year the club had 21 competitors who took on the course with panache and grit.

The first event of the day was the ladies Seniors Cross Country and the club was well represented by Joanna Cullen, Aisling Growney, Michelle Lambkin, Fiona Duggan, Sandra Pegman, Louise Cullen, Ann Kirwan, Lisa Phelan. The ladies displayed an excellent performance on team running. The ladies ran together and pushed each other on and challenging each other in the process. The ladies excelled in their efforts and were rewarded with gold in the team event. The ladies finished with 16 points squeezing out Bray who finished with 18 points. This was a fantastic achievement well done to all involved.

In the men's race the club was represented by 13 runners. The gruelling 10K course was challenging and the extra lap definitely required that extra determination. With each runner giving it their all a team prize was hoped for. But as the saying goes in athletics, every runner counts and every position matters it prevailed on the day our men's team lost out on bronze by 1 point to Inbhear Dee. (Inbhear Dee 53 points, Kilcoole Ac 54 points).

The club had many runners making their debut at Senior Cross Country level and the club wishes to thank all who participated and look forward to seeing you at the masters in January 2012 (if eligible), or again at the Novice Cross Country possible in October 2012. On the day it was also notable we had some club members absent due to injury we wish you a speedy recovery. The final thank you of the article must go to the great support we had on the day. On behalf of all the athletes thank you. Full results.

24th October 2011:

Gerry Farnan Cross Country.

Conditions were suitably testing for the traditional start to the cross country season in the Phoenix Park Sunday 24th October, not that they seemed to bother our own athletes. Kilcoole AC was well represented having a team in the ladies senior event and 2 competitors in the Masters Category. Fionnuala (Britton) defended her Gerry Farnan Memorial title with some ease, coming home a full minute and 10 seconds ahead of Dundrum's Aoife Byrne - a very impressive margin over a mere three miles - and with that underlined her intention to target glory at the European Cross Country Championships, set for Slovenia on December 11th. The 27 year old dominated throughout, with Byrne forced into second from early on, while Lizzy Lee from Leevale claimed third. On the day the club senior team also consisted of Una Britton and Joanna Cullen. The ladies team put in a strong performance finishing 5th overall in the team event.

We also had Anne McFadden and Lousie Cullen competing in the Ladies masters event. They finished 6th and 7th respectively in their category narrowly missing out on qualifying for the Irish team to compete at European level. Thanks to all who participated and represented our club at the highest standard in the country. The club appreciates your effort and determination.

Unfortunately we had no male athletes participating this year come on lads, test your self against the best next year.

21st March 2011:

Kilcoole AC and Ireland's Fionnuala Britton finished 16th in the 35th IAAF World Cross Country Championships held in Punta Umbria.

There was a real carnival atmosphere at the event as the Spanish hosts spared nothing in their efforts to make the championships a big success. The glorious sunshine only added to the occasion - at least for those at the venue as spectators. Athletes were shaded somewhat from the intense rays of the sun by the tree lined nature of the course, happy to take any protection offered.

Fionnuala Britton (Kilcoole AC) got a great start in the senior women's race and then settled into a position in the mid-teens. As the race unfolded she never looked like losing her place.

Her finishing time of 26:25 meant she was the second european to finish the testing course. A fantastic achievement for person, club and country.

Congratulations Fionnuala and continued success in the future.

The photo is a great action shot of John Baldwin over taking his cross country nemeses Ben Mooney and the legendary Peter Savage waiting to make his move on both. Well done to all and thanks for representing our club in style.
